EVAZION

Is slow travel a fad?

Where to go when you don't have the freedom to travel that you used to have? The pandemic highlighted a way of travelling that already existed for some of us: slow travel. With the borders closed, it was time to explore around the house. But does that mean travelling? There was a boom in bike trips, van trips and micro-adventures. Welcome to slow travel

Slow travel comes from a more general movement of slow life. A philosophy that started around food. In 1986, in Italy, an anti-McDonald's citizen movement fought to support regional cuisine and local farmers. This was the birth of slow food. The concept spread quickly and today it has spread to the travel industry. "Slow" and "present" are the key words for a successful trip.

LESS BUT BETTER

What does this mean in practice? It means getting to know a place, its traditions, its cuisine and its sights rather than ticking all the boxes on a to-do list. The quality of the experience rather than the marathon of exhaustiveness. Exploring a region rather than a country. Enjoying the moment. You live and feel experiences.

This slow pace is also a guarantee of deep renewal since time no longer dictates actions. Discoveries, encounters, connections, it means getting out of the frantic rhythm, disconnecting, and returning to simple things. It is quite natural that some modes of transport have become part of this movement, such as the train, the bicycle and even the van.

A NEW DEFINITION OF TIME

Slow travel redefines our relationship with time and the van is the very image of freedom. Ideally, the trip should be planned according to your desires, improvisation, stops on the spur of the moment. You live to the rhythm of the kilometres and the sun. Quite an experience. In addition, there is a minimalist dimension to the material needs. Little space, maximum optimisation and therefore little stuff. Or rather the essentials to keep the house comfortable. And all this fits well with the definition of "slow" since we are less into consumption and more into preservation.
